Man charged for selling hacked Comcast modems, faces up to 20 years in prison, $250,000 fine
Section: Business News

Sure, the thought of testing your skills at hacking a modem to get free internet access is kind of interesting, but trying to get some cash out of it is something I wouldn’t have done. While Matthew Delorey’s entrepreneurial intentions are worth commending, the legality of his actions are to be questioned. Having hacked Comcast modems for free internet access, he decided to sell them to make a quick buck. The hack involves modifying the modems’ MAC address to deceive the internet service provider that the user appears to be a legitimate subscriber’s modem. He distributed the hacks via his own, now-defunct website called “Massmodz.com” and several other Youtube videos. The 26-year-old lad is charged with one count of conspiracy and one count of wire fraud. If convicted, he could face up to 20 years in prison for each charge, and a $250,000 fine. Let this be a lesson learned for all.
