The Twitterati Use an iPhone App to Prove Something

April 30th, 2009 | Comments Off | Posted in General, Hot Stuff, Tech News, Technology

Julia Allison thinks she has something to prove, Zillow CEO Rich Barton thinks he personally brought down AT&T, and MSNBC anchor Tamron Hall think she's a neutral vessel for news. Other delusions of the Twitterati:

Internet microcelebrity Julia Allison gazed into the abyss.

Rich Barton, CEO of real-estate startup Zillow, let his iPhone app go to his head.

VH1 pop-culture commentator John Aboud sartorialized.

New Yorker writer Susan Orlean finally turned into a crazy cat lady, as we'd all kind of expected.

MSNBC anchor Tamron Hall feigned objectivity.

The Sixth European Satellite Competition

The Sixth European Satellite Competition is an annual search for the best application ideas for satellite navigation. In recent years, the winning innovations have included a rescue system for persons who have fallen overboard at sea; a mobile, GPS-supported social network; a mobile phone-based guidance system that aids more economical driving; a remote monitoring system for recovering heart patients; a Web 2.0 platform that delivers location-based videos in real time; and a flood prediction system. It's not quite American Idol for entrepreneurs, but there are many similarities. Apart from the monetary prize, success in the competition paves the way to market for your talents, with significant partners. Entries open May 1...

Windows 7 to debut on or around October 23rd, according to Acer

April 30th, 2009 | Comments Off | Posted in General, Hot Stuff, Tech News, Technology

someone_talkedA loose-lipped Acer spokesman appears to have put a date on Windows 7. Quoth Bobby Watkins from Acer UK:

23rd October is the date the Windows 7 will be available. There is a 30 day upgrade time so that customers don’t wait to buy a new computer, so if you buy during that 30 day period, you’ll get a free upgrade to Windows 7.

Gasp! And here we were expecting to maybe be able to order it around Christmas! Instead, it’ll apparently be around for Acer to pack onto their recently announced Z5600, which they say is built for 7.

Of course, there’s no guarantee this information is what it appears to be; maybe “availability” to Watkins means a date Microsoft has pledged to have finalized pricing or something. At any rate, I’m guessing we’ll soon hear from Microsoft on this issue. I say the sooner, the better.

companion photo for Windows 7 RC arrives on TechNet, MSDN, Connect

As expected, the Windows 7 Release Candidate (build 7100) is now available on TechNet and MSDN in English, French, German, Japanese, and Spanish. The build first leaked last week, again showing that pirates are often the first to get the goods. As a reminder, the build string for the RC is "7100.0.winmain_win7rc.090421-1700," which indicates that it was compiled on April 21, 2009, at 5:00pm. Newer builds already exist, of course, but this is the one Microsoft has deemed the RC, meaning this is the one that everyone should be testing and giving feedback on. Product keys from the beta will work on this build. This week Microsoft also gave its Microsoft Connect testers the same build, as shown in the screenshot below:
